Earrings: These must be simple gold or silver studs. Please arrange ear piercings for the start of the summer holiday.Watches: These can be digital or analogue. Smartwatches are not permitted. Fit-bit type devices are not necessary or encouraged.

Hair accessories: These should be simple hair bands or clips, red, black or white in colour. We discourage excessively large bows or bands. These can be worn outside of school.

Wearing Jewellery (including earrings) in PE and Sport Lessons.

Wearing of jewellery of any kind, including watches and earrings, is not permitted in PE or sport lessons. This is in line with policy advice from national sporting bodies, including the Association for Physical Education.We ask parents/carers to support the school’s work by;

  • ensuring children do not wear earrings to school on the days they have PE, or another sporting event, such as Sports Day or a session with an external coach.

  • having their child’s ears pierced at the start of the summer holiday, to allow healing time.

What if a child has their ears pierced?

During the period of time following the piercing and the earrings being safely removed (approximately 6 weeks), children will only be allowed to participate in PE lessons if both of the following conditions are met;

  • the school has received written permission, and acceptance of risk, from a parent/carer. This can be via email. Verbal permission alone is not accepted.

  1. the child has their earrings taped over before they come to school, or they tape over their earrings themselves at the start of the lesson. Note that school staff will not tape over a child’s earrings.

If either, or both, of these conditions are not met, the child will take a non-physical role in the PE lessons. For example, they may be a referee or help with the organisation of the equipment.

Teachers/coaches withhold the right to remove any child from the physical element of a PE lesson if they deem the risk to a child wearing earrings is too high.

What if my child represents the school at a sports event?

Jewellery of any kind must be removed if your child represents the school in any competitions/events organised by external agencies, including The Shepway Sports Trust, in line with their risk assessments.
