Science - Investigating Friction
As part of our work learning about forces, we investigated which shoe had the best tread for different surfaces. Once we had chosen our selection of shoes and the surface type (which we kept the same throughout) we used Newton meters to pull the shoe, reading and recording the force required to move each shoe. We recorded the data in Newtons (N) and grams. Initially, we found the shoes moved really easily, so we added a 500g weight to each shoe we tested.
Our predictions were very accurate!
Trip To Brockhill Country Park
Despite the heavy rain and muddy conditions, Class 5 had a thoroughly enjoyable day at Brockhill Country Park, working with the brilliant Ranger Kate.
During the morning, we used bow saws and palm drills to make our own necklaces. After a well-deserved lunch we worked in groups to make rafts - which we later tested on the stream - and used flint and steels to make a fire and roast marshamallows.
Science - Aristotle or Galileo?
We learnt that Aristotle belived that heavier objects fall faster than lighter objects, whilst Galileo believed that the weight of a object made no difference to the speed at which it fell. Our predictions split the class in half, with members supporting both theories. We did our own investigations to find out who was correct!
Using two identical pots and dropping them from the same height (to make it a fair test) we found out that both pots hit the ground at the same time, eventhough one of the pots had more weights in it than the other one. Many of us were surprised to find out that Galileo was correct!
Local Author Michele Sheldon Visits Class 5.
Ms. Bailey kindly asked a local author, Michele Sheldon to come and visit Saltwood as part of the World Book Week celebrations and we were one of the two classes chosen to have the pleasure of speaking to Michele about her previous books and her recently released third book in the series. Michele spent some of the time speaking to us about the rainforest and her experiences of being in the rainforest and this gave us the chance to revisit different thing we had learnt in Year 4. Then Michele introduced us to her newest book which is set in space and we spoke about our recent learning in our science topic of space, then Michele gave us the pleasure of hearing her read one of the chapters from her newest book. To cap it all off, we were given the opportunity to buy a signed copy of Michele’s books.
Outdoor Learning at Brockhill Country Park.
Now the weather is better we were able to spend the whole day at Brockhill, working with Ranger Ella on this occasion.
We started off revising our knowledge of what can be recycled and the importance of recycling as much as we can. We learnt that 'paper' take-away cups can't actually be recycled in paper waste as they contain a thin layer of plastic. Let's all try and reduce the amount of these we use from now on, using a re-useable travel mug instead for example.
We identified the wide variety of habitats at Brockhill, including the lake, grassland areas, streams and rotten tree trunks. In small groups, we made our own habitats, some of which can be seen in these photographs.
After our delicious packed lunches, eaten outdoors, we found a quiet place to lie down and listen to a story read by Ranger Ella. We then stayed silent and listened to the range of sounds we could hear.
Finally, we made putty and scented it with Lavender and/or Rosemary from the herb garden.
Unfortunately, this was our final day as part of the Downs on your Doorstep project. We have thoroughly enjoyed each trip to Brockhill - Thank You Rangers Kate and Ella!

Year 5 Trip to Farming Day at Brockhill Farm
Class 5 had a fun-filled farm day at Brockhill today during which they watched some sheep-shearing, made crafts from wool, planted a sunflower seed, had some encounters with the cows, pigs, goats, donkeys and also did some 'wild' cooking. In the afternoon they took part in a scarecrow making competition. They created a straw-based version of Mr Mullin, complete with clothes that Mr Mullin had donated that morning!
