Anglo Saxons against Vikings!
Class 5 are learning about the Battle of Edington, which was King Alfred’s last stand against the Great Heathen Army of Vikings!
In 878AD a great Viking army was raised to take revenge for the execution of a high ranking Viking (Ragnor) by the Saxons of Northumbria.
The Viking army destroyed the Saxon kingdoms of Northumbria and Mercia, leaving only Wessex remaining – the Last Kingdom, ruled by King Alfred the Great, (the only English Monarch to ever be known as “the Great”).
Before the battle, King Alfred invited the Viking leader Guthrum, and a few of his warriors, to spend some time together and discuss whether peace could be agreed, thereby avoiding War…

Class 5 Open Lesson
Year 5 had a wonderful open lesson on Tuesday this week, creating educational models of coasts. Using Modroc, their existing knowledge of coastal features, and some creative expression, the models came to life very quickly! Everyone had an enjoyable afternoon, and the super-hard quiz that followed meant that we all learned something new!
