Class 5
See what Class 5 got up to last year!
Creating And Teaching Our Own Invasion Games
This term in PE, we have been learning about invasion games (e.g. football, basketball and hockey) and we have mostly been focusing on improving our skills in a less common invasion game called Ultimate Frisbee. As part of our learning, we were encouraged to create our own activities based on the skills we have been progressing this term such as passing, finding space, marking and throwing towards a target area. When we had created our activities, we had some time to practice teaching our activity and get used to different roles such as statistician, referee, coach, timekeeper and grounds person. Then it was over to us the be the teachers and teach other groups our activity, this was a lot of fun being the teacher. Please spend some time looking at the pictures of use teaching our activities.
Ultimate Frisbee Inter-House Competition
As part of our PE lessons this term, we have been learning the different skills, tactics, rules and roles within the invasion game of Ultimate Frisbee and as our learning in this topic is coming to an end, we looked to apply everything we have learning in an inter-house competition. In the competition, we played three 9-minute matches, meaning we played every house once. For a win we would receive three points, for a draw would receive one point and we would not score any points for a loss. There was lots of great skill on show such as passing, possession play, marking, teamwork and sportsmanship. Following the completion of all the matches the final results were Hastings (1st, 50 house points), Dover (2nd, 35 house points), Sandwich (3rd, 20 house points) and Romney (4th, 10 house points). Please take a look at some of the shots of us in action.
Outdoors and Adventurous Activities
This term in PE, we have been looking at the Outdoors and Adventurous Activities (OAA) aspect of the PE curriculum. In OAA, we have to work well as part of a team to solve problems and complete tasks and this was evident in all our lessons, as Mr Mullin would set us lots of different challenges which we needed to try and complete as part of a team, these challenges were there to test lots of skills such as communication, teamwork, problem solving, map reading, agility and coordination. To finish off our OAA unit we were also challenged to an orienteering race around the playground which really put all our newly honed skills to the test. These lessons have been really fun and has set us up well for the Bowles residential activities next year.
Making our Wobble Bots
As part of our DT curriculum this term, we have been learning about electrical systems and this particularly focused on the use of a motor in an electrical system. To start our learning about electrical systems, learn what a series circuits is and how to make a series circuit which included a motor and a light. Then as we progressed our knowledge, we looked to recreate an existing electrical product known as a Doodler which is an electrical toy that uses a motor to cause the Doodler to jump and move and therefore leaving a pen mark on the paper below. After this, we looked at how we can adapt the purpose of the Doodler by using trial and error to think about making another electrical product. From our findings, we went on to design our own electrical product and then created this product, we came up with so many get creations such as a jumping kangaroo, ship a sea, the London Eye and many others. Please take some time to have a look at the pictures and videos from out lessons.
Viking Longships
This term we have been learning about the Vikings and as part of our homework we were set the task of making Viking Longships and the final products did not disappoint, we had many different types of Viking Longship coming into the class including ships made from biscuits, banana, gingerbread, fruit, Lego, junk modelling, wood, 3D printing materials and CAD software. Please look at some of our wonderful creations in the pictures.
Anglo-Saxon Battle
Then we moved on to the second battle, the Battle of Edington, where the Vikings arrived in Northumbria (the playground) and they were trying to take control of Britain. The Anglo-Saxons tried to defend themselves but were unsuccessful and were left living in just Wessex (the quite area), also, King Vortigern (Freddy) went into hiding. After this, the Anglo-Saxons retaliated and regained some land, this is when the Treaty of Wedmore was signed by King Alfred (Freddy) and King Guthrum (Eliot).
It was such an amazing day full of great history knowledge and brutal battles!!! Thank you to all the parents and adults for their support during the day.
